Moment of Truth: The Horse-Buying Test Ride
Looking for a new horse partner is a fun, frustrating, exciting and discouraging process–all at once.
Of the many candidates I’d considered, this mare appealed to me the most. She was a bit out of my price range, but she was an older been-there, done-that mare, ridden in dressage as well as on the trail, and was so quiet she had been used as a lesson horse. She had gorgeous conformation and the kind of solid, stout build that I love. I had carefully studied her photos and videos and coaxed many of my horse friends to do the same, all with rave reviews. What use is a horse that’s barely taller than your knees?
Plenty, according to those who love Miniature Horses. Miniature Horse owners show their animals in halter and performance classes, drive them, and use them in therapeutic work with disabled people. Some prefer “minis” because they are easy for children and older people to handle and enjoy. And a few advocates are even training Miniature Horses to be guides for the blind. More info...

The first Horse Events in Pomona at Fairplex was a huge success………..three vendor buildings were full, trailers and rigs sold, clinics were packed and the horse industry looked like it was making a come back with more folks talking about hauling, camping, trail riding and horses in general. Daily at 1 pm “Horsecamping” drew lots of folks and I guess I should have printed more than the usual 500 handouts because they were gone by Friday. In case some of you didn’t get a copy, missed signing up for one at Two Horse Enterprises’ vendor booths or just would like a copy, e-mail me at horsecamping@comcast.net and I’ll send you the 12 pages!!
Really enjoy going to expos and events. Remeet lots of people from the previous years. Get to talk about my favorite things — horsecamping and trail riding — plus always pick up some new tips and ideas. This year a gal gave me what she calls the “Extra Gaits of Horses”. It’s true and funny. All of us have had a horse do at least one of these gaits and I’d like to share them here. So sit down in comfortable chair and giggle along with me…….. More info...
