How to feed horses in winter, especially those who tend to be hard keepers, is a hot topic as we head into the cold months here in the northern hemisphere. Top of the list of best winter feeding practices (and year round too), is giving horses free access to hay around the clock.
Sorting out the truth from the fiction. Alfalfa is actually lower in many nutrients than fresh growing pasture grasses. Timothy or orchard grass should be valued based on freshness. The primary considerations are stage of maturity, leafiness, freedom from musty oder and foreign material - not the species of grass.
Alfalfa – a variety producing fine stems & abundant leaves with irrigation providing the correct amount of water to keep plant stress to a minimum & feed value high.
Grass – orchardgrass/bromegrass mix. Allowing consistent production during hot or cool temperatures, this is a great mix for horsemen who prefer to feed only grass.
Grass/Alfalfa Mix – This is a 70 % grass & 30% alfalfa mix, the most popular mix by request of horse owners & alpaca/llama raisers.
