Chicks may be ordered from poultry hatcheries and are delivered to your home or business by mail. Chicks absorb the remaining nutrients in the egg prior to hatching and thus can be shipped without food or water. Chicks are guaranteed to arrive safely but precautions must be taken to assure someone is present to receive the delivery.
Chicks require a heat source called a brooder to keep them warm the first few weeks. Read "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens" for instructions on building and using a brooder plus care and feeding of baby chicks.
A brooder temperature of 90 to 95 degrees is recommended the first few days. After 48 hours, you may begin to reduce the brooder temperature by one degree each day down to 75 degrees by three weeks of age. If baby chicks huddle together, that is an indication they are too cold. If they scatter, spread out and eat and drink, that indicates the temperature is comfortable.
