Spring at the farm: Rescued animals have fun in the sun
These two piglets, Kimbo and Latte, were born at the Farm Sanctuary's New York shelter after their mother survived the Midwest floods in 2008. The dynamic duo look forward to a spring of rooting and mud baths!
Spring is in the air and whether you're in the city or on the farm, everyone’s eager to go outside and enjoy the nice weather! Each of these beautiful animals were rescued from abuse or neglect by Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, with a shelters in New York and two in California (Orland and L.A.) Now they're taking advantage of the warmer weather at shelters across the country, lounging and playing in the sun. More info...

Bramblestone Wall
Building our wall
As we built this house, barn, pastures, etc.; we found so many stones (more like boulders) that we named the place Bramblestone Farm (see The Bramblestone Farm Story). Today, I’m happy to say that we put those stones to good use (you know, if you get lemons, make lemonade – well, we got stones, so we made a wall).
The first picture to the right shows the side view of the finished dry-stacked stone wall – it’s four feet high by one hundred and twenty feet long, and it’s holding back what was once a nasty bank.
The second picture to the right shows more of a top view of the right side of the wall (there are steps in the middle). It’s taken a long time to collect and use all those stones, but the result rocks More info...

Free Webinar: Disaster Preparedness for Horse Farms
Horses in Floods, Earthquakes, Tornadoes, Wildfires and Hurricanes - Is Your Barn Prepared?
n the last two years, the equestrian community has been hit extremely hard by natural disasters. The story behind Fiona, the blind dog whose video has gone viral
Fiona
If you’ve recently encountered (and cried over) a video of a pup named Fiona, you're not alone. More than 1 million people have watched the clip — which follows Fiona’s transformation from a squalid, blind street dog to a spiffy, happy fluffball with partially restored eyesight — since it made its debut online a week ago.
We tracked down the folks who rescued Fiona, and posted the video, to find out about her skyrocketing fame thanks to the freaky powers of social media and the Internet.
Fiona was actually rescued more than a year ago by Eldad and Audrey Hagar, a married couple who run a non-profit organization called Hope for Paws out of their Los Angeles apartment. The Hagars operate their rescue organization on a shoe-string budget; Eldad, 36, has grown fond of posting YouTube videos of their often-dramatic street rescues when time permits. More info...

Kauai Wild Chickens
Besides having nearly perfect weather every day, Kauai has wild chickens. The chickens escaped during the last hurricane, and established a large wild population – they’re literally everywhere. The way it was explained to us, after they escaped, no one had the heart to “clean them up”. So, today you can see families of chickens (rooster, hen, and peeps) all over the island. They’re along the road, on the beach, and at the resorts. More info...

Goat Cam
The goats are nearing their first kidding dates (see Kidding Schedule for dates); so we had to get a new camera to keep an eye on them. If you click on the picture of the does on the left, it should bring up a camera view of the goats in their stall (unless it’s night-time in which case all will be dark). Anyway, the camera view should look something like the picture on the right (the stall may be empty if they’re outside). More info...

Baby rhino gets a running start on her debut at San Diego Zoo
San Diego Zoo
Two-month-old one-horned rhino Charlees romps in her enclosure at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park during her public debut on March 20, 2012.

San Diego Zoo: Two-month-old Charlees, whose name is Hindi for Charlie, made her public debut at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park Tuesday under blue skies after a rainstorm came through San Diego County this past weekend. The sunshine, combined with her first opportunity to explore the 40-acre Asian Savanna habitat, was a perfect mix for fun. She spent the morning running around meeting the rest of the Park’s seven-member greater one-horned rhino herd. Charlees is the 61st greater one-horned rhino born at the Safari Park since 1975, making the Park the foremost breeding facility in the world for this species. Once widespread in Southeast Asia, the greater one-horned rhinoceros now numbers approximately 2,800 and is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
