Horse Protection Association of Florida

Many of the horses that come to HPAF are malnourished, which is what comes to mind with "rescue". However, helping underfed and neglected horses is only a small part of what HPAF does. Almost every horse requires training or retraining. For those of you familiar with dog rescue, one of the main reasons that dogs are relinquished or abandoned is for behavioral issues. In other words, lack of training. The same is true in horses, only more so.
Horse Sense & Sensitivity
3666 Bridgewood Drive
Jacksonville, FL
904.744.9286
Horse Sense and Sensitivity, Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides facilities and support for therapeutic and educational services for physically and mentally challenged children and adults in the Jacksonville area. Through the use of equine assisted therapy and hippotherapy, horses are used to provide physical and occupational therapy through a wide variety of activities. Licensed physical and occupational therapists create programs customized to the needs of each individual. On horseback, individuals work to strengthen muscles and to improve balance and coordination. As the horse “walks for them” they have the opportunity to feel what it would be like to walk by themselves, and they use muscles they have not been fully utilizing. The emotional connection to the horse provides an additional dimension to the therapy. Volunteers assist as “horse handlers” and “side-walkers” to insure the safety of participants. A wheelchair ramp is available for anyone needing to go directly from a wheelchair to the horse.
